It's been a long haul, but it has definitely been worth the wait - everyone can now install the latest version of this amazing games development kit for free, regardless of whether they are using a Mac, Windows PC or Linux machine. As with the previous Stencyl releases, Flash games can be published without parting with a single cent, with only a small Stencyl banner being shown when the game first loads.
- iOS (iPhone/iPad)
It should be noted that when publishing to a particular desktop platform, you must have Stencyl running on that platform when you export your finished game. In other words, to export a Mac game, you need to be running Stencyl on a Mac, for a Windows game, you need to be running on Windows, etc. Also, if you want to export to iOS, you must be running Stencyl on a Mac. However, Android games can be exported from Mac, Windows or Linux machines. Of course, to get anything running on an actual iOS device, you're going to have to hand over your $99 to Apple for a developer licence!
There are so many improvements to be found in Stencyl 3.0, that I'm not going to list them; go visit Stencyl.com and see for yourself what has improved. Make sure you visit the Stencyl community forums, where you'll find some of the most helpful people you're ever likely to meet on the Internet.
Finally, a quick plug; for those of you who don't know, I'm the author of Packt Publishing's Learning Stencyl 3.x: Beginner's Guide - learn more at www.TheStencylBook.com.
I also have an on-line video course that will teach you how to complete your very own game from scratch, even if you have no coding or game design skills. There are almost 7 hours of high-definition video tutorials, with more than 50 lessons to help you create your first game. The course is normally $195, but it's still available at its pre-launch price of only $45. Over 180 students have already joined the course, so visit the course web site at www.LearnStencyl.com and make sure that you click on the red pre-launch link to get the special offer discount.
